SAFEST COUNTRY IN THE REGION

According to the 2011 Global Peace Index, Uruguay is the safest country in the region, and one of the safest countries in the world, ranking number 21 out of the 153 countries that were ranked.

This means Uruguay is safer than the United States (ranked 82), the United Kingdom (ranked 26), France (ranked 36), and Spain (ranked 28).

Uruguay also got high marks for being the most democratic, for having the highest GDP per capita, the highest literacy rate, and the highest life expectancy in the region, as well as the lowest corruption and infant mortality rate.

Uruguay is South America's haven of safety and political and economic stability.
